Astronaut Shares Emotional Distress Following Wave of Online Abuse After Historic Trip
A pioneering space traveler has spoken candidly about her battle with depression after facing a “tsunami of harassment” in the wake of a pioneering women-only spaceflight.
The 34-year-old activist – recognized as a researcher and activist – was part of the brief journey to space earlier this year, which also included well-known figures.
The much-publicized journey was widely scrutinized by some, who questioned its cost and carbon footprint.
Reflecting on the situation, the astronaut, who became the pioneer for her community, stated the negative reaction buried her dreams under an “avalanche of misogyny”.
“I told her my depression might last for years,” she recounted in a social media post, recalling a phone call from a mission companion in the aftermath of the flight.
She characterized the news reports and online discourse as an barrage beyond typical human coping.
“For a full week, I was bedridden and couldn't leave my Texas location,” she confessed. “A month later… I had to hang up… because I could not speak through my tears.”
Eclipsed by Backlash
The researcher, who has focused her career on female health science and performed experiments during the mission, said every professional achievement – including her lab work and extensive preparation to the symbolic importance of her heritage – was drowned out under the deluge of gendered attacks.
She is best known for her tireless campaigning fighting for justice for survivors of assault.
Her own goal of reaching space was put on hold after surviving a rape during her college days, leading to a protracted legal battle.
A Path to Recovery
Months following reaching space, she noted the deepest pain is gradually receding, and she expressed gratitude the well-wishers whose kindness pulled her through. “Your support rescued me,” she said.
She concluded that despite the negativity, important benefits had resulted from the experience, such as spotlight on her women's health research and new advocacy opportunities.
About the Mission
The computer-piloted New Shepard rocket launched from its launch site in April, carrying the all-female team on a 11-minute journey that passed the edge of outer space.
The team of pioneers also comprised accomplished professionals from various fields.
The venture behind the mission is a commercial aerospace company launched by a prominent billionaire entrepreneur.
